The Light on the Inland Sea
Over the last year, I have been shooting thousands of timelapse sequence photographs of the inland sea known as Puget Sound or the Salish Sea. I've been watching the way that light moves across this glacier-carved waterway, and the way the clouds form and re-form dynamically. These are some of the best sequences from the last 12 months - watch for the glimmer of rainbow in the storm.
In the last year, I have begun shooting large numbers of timelapse sequences and creating video pieces from them. The result is the Timelapse Photography Video pages below. They can be viewed in standard definition or in High Definition (if you have a high-speed DSL or cable internet connection) by clicking the HD button on the right side of the video. Ephemerology - Seattle Night Visions
This is kind of an experiment for me - a collection of movement and color from dusk and evening light around Seattle. I am trying out a layering of time-lapse and stills with pan and zoom in post, to give another dimension to the time-lapse clips. It's kind of like juggling - keeping all the tracks in the air at the same time - I'm hoping that it all works together.
Seven Bridges - Seattle
Seattle has a secret - there is a beautiful canal going through the heart of the city. The Ship Canal connects Puget Sound with the large freshwater lake to the east and splits the city right in two. Since Seattle is also a big maritime city, there are thousands of ships, large and small, that transit this canal -- including riding the Ballard Locks that raise and lower boats from sea level. This timelapse video shows one day along the canal and under the seven bridges that cross it.
Winter Light - Northwest
Winter light in the Pacific Northwest is extremely changeable - from brooding and stormy to sudden flashes of golden clarity. Seattle, especially when we are under the jet stream, tends to have about four seasons every day. In many ways, it's more like mountain light, even though it is at sea level. This video is the result of about 3000 still shots from two Canon cameras, sometimes shooting simultaneously. Most of it was shot one lucky afternoon, when, against all odds, the sun made it through the clouds just at sunset...
